5 Common Problems with Subaru's Turbocharged FA Platform

The FA series engine powers the newer WRX (FA20DIT) and BRZ (NA FA20). While a big step forward in tech and efficiency, it’s not without its own challenges. Here are the top 5 common issues with turbocharged FA engines:

  1. Carbon Build-Up on Intake Valves – Due to direct injection, carbon deposits can cause drivability issues and power loss.

  2. Oil Consumption – Some FA20 engines burn oil, especially under hard driving. Keep a close eye on oil levels.

  3. Turbo Failure – The twin-scroll turbo variants can fail due to oiling issues or contamination. Regular oil changes are a must.

  4. Timing Chain Tensioner Noise – Rattling at start-up is common. While not always critical, it's annoying and should be inspected.

  5. High Pressure Fuel Pump Noise – A ticking sound at idle is normal, but excessive noise can indicate problems or poor fuel.

Preventative maintenance and using high-quality oil/fuel helps extend the life of your FA engine.
